Now Women Told: Delay Cervical Exam
CHICAGO — Women in the United States should start cervical cancer screening at age 21 and most do not need an annual Pap smear, according to new guidelines issued Friday that aim to reduce the risk of unnecessary treatment.
The guidelines from the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists or ACOG now say women younger than 30 should undergo cervical cancer screening once every two years instead of an annual exam. And those age 30 and older can be screened once every three years.
The recommendations are based on scientific evidence that suggests more frequent testing leads to overtreatment, which can harm a young woman's chances of carrying a child full term.

FACT: The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) is no more a governent agency than is the VFW. ACOG is a non-profit professional organization that receives no government money and has a membership that is both Republican and Democrat. In fact, ACOG represents 90 percent of all U.S. board-certified obstetrician-gynecologists. Their recent recommendation regarding cervical cancer screening has nothing to do with politics and, in fact, is supported by the American Cancer Society.

If a young woman becomes sexually active at 18 years old and is unlucky enough to have lost her virginity to a man carrying the HPV virus (highly contagious - even via skin to skin contact) ... because she is not afforded a pap smear under these new guidelines until she is age 21, that is 3 long years for HPV to create precancerous cells on her cervix and turn cancerous.

Anyone thinking that delaying pap smears and mammograms isn't rationing should read the story of Stephanie Spielman, who passed away on Thursday from breast cancer after a 12 year battle at the age of 42.
She leaves her husband Chris, a former All-American LB of Ohio State and the Buffalo Bills and 4 children. May she rest in peace. The timing of her passing couldn't be more poignant. Early detection extends and saves lives !!

you guys are aware that this is an independent group and isn't run by the governement... its the same thing.... an independent panel of experts in primary care and prevention that systematically reviews the evidence of effectiveness and develops recommendations for clinical preventive services... you don't have to follow their advice and it's not rationing of health care

What the heck? A gyno exam is fast, inexpensive and saves lives! 2 years? 3 years? thats long enough for cancer to show up and ruin a young woman's life! Pretty soon they're gonna make the HPV vaccine mandatory and say no one needs a cervical exam, ever! Mammogram? HA! Girls who are sexually active should be examed AT LEAST yearly for signs for STDs and abnormal cells that are the precursor to cancer or worse! This is just ridiculous and I don't know what kind of bureaucrat would approve this sort of thing - except it couldn't have been a REAL female doctor.
