Coburn Backs Off Bill Reading

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Tom Coburn is backing off his threat to require that the Senate read the 2,074-page health care bill because some GOP colleagues aren't supporting the effort.

The Oklahoma lawmaker said there's uncertainty about whether reading the bill during Thanksgiving week would be productive. He also said that if the Republicans do decide to tie up the Senate for the dozens of hours it would take, six GOP colleagues have committed to pitching in on reading duty.

If our elected Representatives are above reading the bills they vote on, they are accepting their pay under false pretences and do not deserve to represent us. Take notes for future elections, I'm sure we can find candidates that will take their jobs seriously! The GOP and the DEMS need to find out we are watching and if they won't give us good candidates, we will find our own!

Considering we are not sure what is going to be in the final bill..I guess I can see his point. What the politicians don't realize is the American people are reading the many bills out there and we don't like any of them! I am tired of everyone saying the republicans aren't presenting anything...they are..the dems are not even giving them a chance to talk. Self serving arrogance will get you no where.

The stimulus money has been STOLEN. The reason there are so many mistakes on RECOVERY.ORG is because it is a fictional coverup of the billions of $$ the Obama administration has secretly given to ACORN, SEIU, and individuals for their past and future support and votes. Contact your senators and representatives and tell them to demand an INDEPENDENT accounting of all the stimulus monies. Until we have one, we can assume the OBAMA administration has STOLEN the money.

Reading what you are voting on should be a very important given. I can't believe our congressmen are refusing to read the bill. Maybe some will???? How in the world can you effectively debate if you don't know the particulars they are debating. They should not only be reading but making a list of exact talking points. Both sides of the aisle are letting us down on this issue. Most of us already know the whole thing is a big mistake but they should still be reading it.

How can you know it's a mistake unless you have read it yourself? Why would you waste time debating something you have already vowed to vote against? Why would anyone waste their breath debating you?

I would need a lawyer to understand this bill. I admit that. What I do know is that we can't afford this. What is do know is that it has failed with its other plans, won't fix them, and they want to start another failure. What I strongly suspect is that the money people will be paying in for 2 or 3 years before they can use it will be spent instead of put in a trust fund they will not be allowed to raid. What I do know is that we have too much govenment control over us now and I don't want any more. I know I want my senators to be very much up on what is in the bill and reporting it. That is why they need to read it and with a lawyer if they don't understand it either. People need to use common sense and be wary of handouts. They could be poison.

I agree that legislators must read the bills!
When our legislators don't read and research the bills they pass into law, we often end up with gross violations of our rights or serious waste. And we end up with economic bubbles which burst and put us into serious recessions.
Witness violations of rights: Patriot Act
Gross waste: Bush Bailout, Stimulus package
Economic Bubble: Revising the Community Reinvestment Act, repealing of the Glass-Steagall Act, lowering lending requirements for financial instutions.
Legislators should read, understand and research the actual bill they are to pass, not some watered down interpretation to what the bill says.
We elect and pay them to do a good job, not pass the buck to someone unseen person we didn't elect. Sometimes it's what's not in the bill that causes the most harm. You can't know about these without personally reading the actual bill, and dotting the I's and crossing the T's.
Legislators should be proud enough of their work that they aren't afraid to post their legislation on the Internet before the vote.

You are in a battle for our country, you six Republicans. Rally your moral duty and read the bill over Thanksgiving week. Keept this travesty from passing. We have sons and daughters in Afghanistan that the president is letting sit isolated over there with inadequate support. You can read the rationing, socialist economy destroying bill. DO YOUR JOB.
