Atheists Sue to Scrub 'God' from Capitol Visitors Center

Reps. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.), John Boehner (R-Ohio) and Eric Cantor (R-Va.) are ganging up to block a lawsuit seeking to scrub "In God We Trust" from the wall of the new Capitol Visitors Center.

In all, 41 House Republicans have signed onto to an amicus brief opposing an attempt by the Madison, Wisc.-based Freedom From Religion Foundation to remove the inscription, which also includes the words "one nation under God."

Christians need to take a stand before it's too late. Look what's happening in Britain. It's already happening here.

Ovid: Fortunately for me, the United States Supreme Court agrees with me - not you - in that by refusing to hear any more cases they have affirmed that "In God We Trust" IS NOT A RELIGIOUS STATEMENT. By the way, that phrase is also on the wall at the Supreme Court. Looks like I'm not wrong at all.

"In God we trust" is the motto of the United States of America.. Look it up I think it is also the motto of a few states also.. Its also in the last verse of the national anthem..(we only sing the first at baseball games and such). Guess we should change all of that too... And to never recite the declaration of independence.. for it says "which the laws of nature and of nature's God entitle them" and "that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights"...
By the "Seperation of Church and State" as seen by atheists the Declaration of Independence can not be viewed in a government building.

"Jim in Jax" has it RIGHT concernin the First Amendment. But I an fascinated by atheists! They seem to be afraid as he!! of something they to not believe in or is true! That simply makes no sense! Noone forces them to believe, or attend church! Have they been turned down a job, or housing, food, clothing, etc. because they are atheist? Maybe being atheist is just boring as he!!, and they need to fill their time with this to feel a part of SOMETHING!

As a dem. let me just say there had better be a whole lot of democrats that sign to stop this from happening. If they don't like that we and this country believe in God then I guess they need to leave this country ,I don't think anyone would care if they left. I know I wouldn't.

If either side is going to try to quote the First Amendment to make any point, you should at least TRY to get it right. Most get the first part right, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion," but then you leave out the second part,".. or prohibiting the free exercise thereof" You can't use one part without the other. Putting "In God We Trust" on any building isn't the establishment of a religion as no one is forced to believe it. But blocking it IS "prohibiting the free exercise thereof".

You are entirely wrong. Putting "Ingod we trust" on a public building is an endorsment of religion, which is "establishment." An individual has the right to free exercise of religion, a slogan on a public building is not an individual expressing their first amedment right. You are seriously ill informed about the first amendment.

I heard an atheist once say - dont force your values on me. I would encourage them to walk their talk and stop pushing their belief that God does not exist on the rest of the 92% of Americans who do believe He exists. Secondly, let us keep whatever phrase is normal and acceptable since we paid 92% of the tax bill that built these government buildings.

So there is a link between atheism and communism but that does not mean that all atheists are communists. It does make them irrational and thoughtless, however. Not to mention arrogant.

Atheist are nothing but a bunch of haters. They pretend to be so rational yet get so irrational at the thought of anything God. If they really think about this, its not about not believing in God, its about believing in God and hating Him.
But one cannot expect the irrational to do that.

USA is not a christian nation. Nothing about god in the constitution at all. All the god stuff was added into the pledge and money during the 40's when people were afraid of communism. There are lots of christians in the country but the constitution protects others from them forcing their religion on everyone else like in this case here. Keep religion statements off of public property. My atheist tax dollars pay for public property too.

It was in the 1800's that it was approved to add on coins and in the very early (Pre WWI) that it was mandatory to mint coin with it. It was not mandatory on paper money (though it was on it before then) until the 1950s. It is also the motto ot the united states after the war of 1812 after being part of the national anthem (we only sing the first part there are four parts)
The phrase in God we trust if a very rich part of our history but has noting to do with wording off communism.

All you Atheists... all you in the minority.. you have no choice. Our country is a Christian nation.. it was founded on Christian principles, our founding fathers saw to that.. Our country will always be a Christian nation... despite what our Muslim president incorrectly states. And I agree with other posters who have said, if you don't think there is a God then what do you have to worry about? Let us believe and go on disbelieving. So just sit down accept it. In God I Trust, in God we trust, Semper Fi and God Bless our country.

where on any post have i ever said that i do not believe in a god, or maybe many gods, or maybe there is no god. You cannot tell me for certain that your god is the right god and everyone else who doesnt believe in christianity is going to eternal damnation. I may not believe in your silly little religion, but that in no way indicates that I dont believe that some higher power is possible. Im just not going to be so naive as to try and tell people that "I am right you are wrong, you are going to hell." or "you are gay so you are going to hell". The fact is religion is a big business, nothing more. theyre in the business of using scare tactics and fear mongering to gather "believers". why do you think religion is taught so young? because kids cant think for themselves and are so gullible that they will believe just about anything, especially if you scare them. as for the first amendment...its say in the first sentence, "congress will not make laws respecting the establishment of a religion". skew it anyway you want, but it says this country does not respect any religion. i agree tho that its BS that they (the government) can promote different religions and not promote christianity. That is discriminatory and definitely wrong. You can believe whatever you want, just dont tell me that you are right and Im wrong, or that this country is based on religion.
