Fred Thompson: Afghan War 'Has Been Lost'
Former Sen. Fred Thompson today intensified his party's criticism of President Obama's long deliberation over policy in Afghanistan, announcing that Obama's delay signals that "the war has been lost" and that nothing the president now does will "make any difference."
"It really doesn't matter how President Obama divides the Afghan baby, how he splits the difference between McChrystal and Biden. Because the war has been lost," Thompson said on his radio show today. "I say this because of one sad and simple fact. The president does not have the will and determination to do what's necessary to win it. His heart's not in it, and never has been. The Taliban knows it. Al Qaeda knows it. Our allies know it. One of my employees, an Army reserve captain, just returned from his 2nd tour in Afghanistan. He no longer believes that our mission there makes sense. According to him, there is, and will never be, a central govenment that the entire country accepts. Instead, Afghanistan will be ruled, as it always has been, by a wide variety of tribal leaders - most of which are now supportive of the Taliban. He (and he says many other officers who have served in Afghanistan) believe that we should cut a deal with the Taliban and then pull our troops out. The deal would be: The Taliban can run the country, but must keep Al-Qaeda from establishing training camps. In return, the U.S. will pull its troops but will closely monitor the country and launch air strikes against any Al-Qaeda bases (along with Taliban targets) that are discovered. His recommendation makes sense. Our battle is with Al-Qaeda, not the Taliban.

That's the point. Any centralized govenment in Afghanistan will be corrupt. It's why cutting deals with the tribal leaders makes sense. Besides, we have a long history of cutting deals with corrupt governments - Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Egypt, Mexico - so there's lot's of precendence here.

Good answer Sammer. Let us not forget we have been playing political war games in Afghanistan for a while. We sided with the Taliban and funded Al qaeda long ago to fight the Russians. Now both of these are biting us in our ass.
Because we were scared of Communism.
I think we would have been better off siding with the Russians. Seems to me they are a little "more stable" than the Taliban. Their social class and general attitude towards life seems a hell of a lot closer to ours than the Taliban.
Afghanistan has always been a graveyard for conquerors.

I don't understand political people who have some input into the process. Congress has an on/off switch. Finance it or not. That is it. The military makes the calls with the president.
